Paint with acceptable VOC levels: The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) reports that most conventional paints and coatings contain Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's) that can be dangerous to your health. An experienced painting company will be able to advise you on the potential health hazards of these chemicals, which products are safest, and how to best manage any VOC risk that may occur. Walls should be wet down before getting scrubbed, then washed with a gallon of water mixed with 1 cup chlorine bleach and 1 cup of either a concentrated, phosphate-free cleaner, such as a trisodium phosphate (TSP) substitute, or Jomax House Cleaner. Working in sections, from the bottom to the top, will avoid streaks. Be sure to rinse walls well before the solution dries. Wood siding and trim should be ready to paint after a day or two of dry weather.
"Very happy to have hired Larry to repaint a bedroom in our house. He gave an honest and upfront quote based on the work needed, and he was eager to get started. He was very communicative throughout the entire process and always arrived on time. He's got a super positive attitude and should we have another project, we'll definitely be sure to call Larry! Painters often tint primer close to the color of the top coat, but Wallis thinks that's a recipe for "holidays," or missed spots. Instead, he tints his primer a contrasting color. "If I can see the color coming through, I know I need to apply more paint," he says. On the cottage shown in this story, he chose a gray-blue primer to go under a peach top coat.
HomeAdvisor uses an extensive screening process to screen businesses and business owners/principals. We perform this screening when a business applies to join our network and, if the business is accepted, once again every two years following — or whenever concerns are brought to our attention. If you have concerns that a pro in our network doesn't meet these standards, please contact us so we can investigate. We're committed to maintaining a network of trusted home service businesses, and those who don't meet our criteria will be rejected or promptly removed from our network. Home Painters
